The Body Scan

Throughout history, people have spent time, money, energy, and resources trying to understand the nature of health and illness. We’ve run the gamut, from superstition to modern science, and have had miraculous success in extending lifespan along the way. Sadly, however, there has been more focus on symptom eradication than on prevention. And while there’s nothing inherently wrong about wanting to feel better, the steps we’ve taken to feel better often preclude the truth that is trying to emerge within the symptoms.

If pain and illness are here to inform us that something we’re doing or a particular way we’re being is out of alignment with our highest and most connected selves, it’s better to ascertain what those messages are and then reverse the direction we’re going accordingly.

But how can we ascertain the hidden meanings within our symptoms? How can we always know what our bodies are trying to say?

We need to go beyond the mind to access our body’s intelligence. The Body Scan is the description I was given to describe this process. It is different from the body scan relaxation technique that many of you may be familiar with, as it is specifically tailored to empaths and HSPs and allows us to see what’s really going on, why the symptom or blockage is there, whose it is, and how to heal it. It has proven itself to be remarkably effective. When we sit with our symptoms rather than trying to push them away or bury them, we create space for a new awareness to arise. An inquiry of what exists creates a map for what can be. The Body Scan is an exercise in allowing what exists to exist, trusting that it does so to inform us rather than to hinder us.

Presence Activation Sequence

The ability to get past conditioned beliefs and into the core of our being is activated through present-moment awareness. One great way to achieve presence is to engage your physical senses. Try the below Presence Activation Sequence or any known grounding exercises that have proven effective for you before beginning the Body Scan.

Sit in a reasonably comfortable position, ideally not on a chair or couch with a back. Somewhat like meditation, we need to minimize the chances of falling asleep as a distraction.

1. Take a few conscious breaths, and look around the room. Make a mental note or say out loud what you see as the light reflects through the window, creating shadows that may be unique to that time of day. Just notice this or other things without adding any stories, or any “should-be” or “shouldn’t be.” Accept everything that is visible to you in that moment.

2. Take a few more conscious breaths, and close your eyes. Tune in to any sounds outside of the room you’re in. Just notice what’s there without any judgment. Stay with that awareness for a bit. Now tune into any sounds that are in the room you’re in. Once again, just notice, without adding a story to them.

3. Tune in to any smells, or lack thereof.
